Valentine’s Day isn’t for another couple of weeks, but Geoff asked me a few weeks ago if I’d be down for one of our plans being a bit early. I said sure, especially once I found out that it was The Empire Strikes Back in concert! The concert was held at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando. It was incredible – it’s not ‘just’ a concert of the music from the film (though that would be amazing too!), we literally got to watch the entire movie, with an orchestra performing all of the music as the movie played! They even played the opening Fox drumroll/fanfare! We only had one intermission and I have to give major kudos to the orchestra for playing through such a long film. Even though there are resting parts where no music is playing, you don’t realize how much of the film has music going on. I could still hear the rest of the film (dialogue, sound effects, etc) but I definitely paid more attention to the music and was shocked at how much I hadn’t noticed before – Leia’s theme transitioning into the Imperial March, said Imperial March playing either more quickly or slowing down in places where I had never realized it was playing before, etc. I’m sad we missed A New Hope in concert, but I’m definitely hoping to catch Return of the Jedi! (I’m also perversely curious if the orchestra will have to play Jedi Rocks.) Here’s a few photos from our evening!
I’m really glad we got to go to this concert. We have a night in planned for Valentine’s Day evening since it’s a work night, and some Disney stuff the weekend after, but this was a great gift for the holiday. If it tours in your town, I highly recommend going to see it!
